Dr. Holger Claus is a distinguished ultraviolet light expert with over 30 years of experience researching and developing new lighting, optical, and electrical products. He holds both a Master's degree and a PhD in Lighting from the Technische Universität Ilmenau in Germany, one of Europe's premier institutions for lighting science and optical engineering.
Throughout his career, Dr. Claus has developed and produced a remarkable range of light sources: fluorescent lamps, various UV lamps, short-arc xenon lamps, laser-driven xenon lamps, super-high-pressure mercury lamps, LED and laser products, and excimer lamps. His deep knowledge extends to drivers, measurements, and regulatory questions surrounding these technologies.
Most recently, Dr. Claus has been at the forefront of introducing 222nm Far UV-C technology to the scientific community and the marketplace. As VP of Technology at Ushio America, he led the technical, scientific, and regulatory efforts behind the Care222® filtered Far UV-C excimer lamp — a breakthrough technology that can inactivate pathogens in occupied spaces while remaining safe for human skin and eyes.
He currently serves as President of A3Lighting Consulting, based in Lake Forest, California, where he provides expert consulting in germicidal UV applications, lamp design, luminaire design, and regulatory compliance.
Dr. Claus is an active member of the International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA) and the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), and serves on various GUV task forces and standards committees. He chaired the Ozone Generation Sub-Committee of the IUVA Far UV-C Task Force, whose white paper became a foundational reference for the field during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Claus is a sought-after speaker at international conferences on UV technology, germicidal applications, and lighting science.
